How we diagnose a boom
A boom tells you what is wrong. You have to read it.
Booms carry more interlocks, more sensors, and more ways to fault than a scissor lift, and that is good news for diagnosis. A machine that refuses to function is usually protecting itself, and the code it stores says why. We read the machine before we touch it, then trace the fault to the component: a valve, a cylinder, a sensor, a contactor, a length of tired harness. Symptoms get you a parts bill. Causes get you a repair.
Intake
Model, serial, and the symptom in your words, plus a photo of the data plate. The plate pins the exact build, which is what the fault codes and service literature are keyed to.
Read the machine
The analyzer goes on before anything comes apart. Stored and active codes, ground control versus platform control behavior, and the interlock chain get read in order.
Trace to the component
A code names a circuit, not a part. We follow the circuit to the failing piece and confirm it, so the repair replaces what actually failed.
Plan and price
You get the findings, what it needs, and what it will cost before any work begins. If a part is going to hold up the repair, you hear that up front.
Repair and function test
The machine gets repaired, then run through its functions and its interlocks before it goes back to work. Paperwork goes with it.

Drive and steer
A boom that will not tramway, creeps in one direction, or steers unevenly is usually a drive motor, a brake that is not releasing, or a control signal that never arrives. On four-wheel-steer machines the steer sensors and their harness are frequent offenders. Pothole protection and axle interlocks also inhibit drive on purpose, so the first job is deciding whether the machine is broken or behaving correctly.
Platform leveling
The platform should stay level through the full arc. When it tips, lags, or hunts, the cause is generally in the leveling circuit: a master or slave cylinder passing oil, a leveling valve, or air in the loop. This is a safety-relevant function and it does not improve on its own.
Interlocks and envelope faults
Booms enforce their own work envelope. Tilt sensors, load sensing at the platform, boom angle and length sensing, and the footswitch all gate what the machine will do. A lift that suddenly refuses to extend or drive at height is often reporting an envelope or sensor fault rather than a mechanical failure, and the stored code says which.
Hydraulic drift
Boom, platform, or jib settling under its own weight means oil is passing somewhere it should be held: a counterbalance or holding valve, a cylinder seal, or a control valve not closing fully. Drift is a load-holding problem, so it gets diagnosed rather than watched.
Joystick and harness
Intermittent functions, dead controls at the platform that work from the ground station, and faults that come and go with boom position usually trace to the control harness, the connector at the turntable, or a joystick that has lost its center. Wiring that flexes through the boom for years is a wear item like any other.
Engine, battery, and charging
Machines that crank and will not start, or electric booms that will not hold a charge through a shift, come down to fuel and ignition on one side and battery health, charger output, and cable condition on the other. Both are measurable, and both get measured before anything is replaced.

Send the plate and the symptom
Two things move a boom lift repair faster than anything else: a photo of the data plate and the symptom in plain words. The plate carries the model and serial, and the serial is what pins the exact configuration your machine left the factory with. Two booms with the same model number can take different valves, different sensors, and different software.
If the machine is throwing a code, send the code. If it only misbehaves at height, or only when it is warm, or only on one function, say so. Those patterns are diagnostic on their own, and they often save a trip. Photos of a leak, a damaged harness, or a bent member help for the same reason.

What does a boom lift repair cost?
We do not quote a boom lift before we know what is wrong with it. The analyzer goes on first, the fault gets traced to the component, and then you get the findings, the plan, and the price together, before any work begins. A drift complaint that turns out to be a tired holding valve and one that turns out to be a scored cylinder are different jobs, and guessing at either one in advance does you no favors.
Do you come to the machine, or does the machine come to you?
Both, and the fault usually decides. Straightforward hydraulic and electrical work goes to the machine in the field. Anything that wants the boom sectioned, a cylinder pulled, or a long diagnostic session goes better in the shop bay. Field repair covers southeastern Wisconsin within about 100 miles of our Germantown shop, and it stays in Wisconsin. The shop accepts machines from anywhere, and parts ship everywhere.
Can you work on a boom lift you have never seen before?
Yes. The serial number and the data plate tell us the exact configuration the machine was built with, which is what the service literature and the fault codes are keyed to. A machine with no service history here runs through the same intake as one we have maintained for years: read the plate, read the codes, trace the cause.
My boom lift drifts down when it is parked. Is that normal?
No, and it is worth taking seriously rather than living with. Drift means something is passing oil that should be holding it: a holding or counterbalance valve, a cylinder seal, or a control valve that is not fully closing. It tends to get worse, and it is a load-holding function, so it belongs in front of a technician rather than on a watch list.
Do you handle the annual inspection at the same time?
Often, yes, and it saves a trip. If a boom lift is already in for repair and the 12-month ANSI A92 inspection is due or close, we can run the inspection on the same visit and hand back the machine documented. The inspection is judged on its own terms either way: the repair does not buy a pass.
